GENDER-BASED violence is still one of the biggest social ills in Mzansi.
Angry South African Commercial Catering and Allied Workers Union (Saccawu) members picketed outside the Atteridgeville Magistrates Court in Tshwane on Wednesday, 3 August where the husband, who allegedly murdered his wife Life Rirhandzu Shisana (33) late last year, appeared.
Union member Nobuntu Maponya said they were supporting their murdered member and her family.
“We are against the fact that he was given bail the last time and he doesn’t even show remorse for what he has allegedly done,” she said.
She said they want the court to be fair.
Maponya said other members have also experienced gender-based violence over the years.
“We call on the justice system to give out maximum sentences to gender-based violence perpetrators,” she said.
Life’s elder brother, Billy Mashava, said the family wants closure.
“We are not happy because the post mortem and other results are taking too long.
“They are saying that we should wait until October because the results are not out yet.
“We are not okay. My mum was in hospital for three months suffering from depression because of this case,” he said.
The case was postponed to 12 October.
