“WHO is behind these killings?”
These were the words of acting Mpumalanga Community Safety MEC Speedy Mashilo on Tuesday, 24 January in the Piet Retief Magistrates Court during the appearance of former Mkhondo mayor Vusi Motha and Wellington Shangweni.
The two have been charged with contravening the Firearms Control Act.
They were arrested on 17 January after the murder of ANC Councillor Sbonelo Ntshangase, Sizwe Mbingo and Sandile Khumalo.
The three were gunned down on 13 January in Longhomes, Mkhondo, by three armed men who fired multiple shots before fleeing.
Two others have appeared in court on a charge of murder and have allegedly confessed.
Mashilo told Daily Sun that he was happy with the arrests, but wanted to know who was behind the killings.
“The real culprit has probably not yet been arrested. We still believe our police will do their work because these might be hitmen and we want the handlers,” he said.

“Who is handling these killings? Who is deciding that people must be killed? We cannot allow that and I am told people live in fear. That must come to an end.”
Mashilo said he believed the task team sent to deal with political killings will find the handlers.
The defence requested time to prepare, and the case was postponed to 2 February for a formal bail hearing.
