FOR 10 years, she was a sex worker and she loved her job.
However, the he 38-year-old now views those years as spiritual torture. The woman from Joburg told Daily Sun she believed she was tormented by evil spirits and bad luck.
She said her problems started when she was in varsity as she failed repeatedly. Her family constantly threatened that they would disown her, prompting her to find other ways to stand on her own feet.
“Before I knew it, I was a prostitute, had moved out of the house and dropped out.” She said she rented a house with another sex worker and slept with her clients there.
“I began having nightmares. Sometimes, I heard weird voices and funny sounds in the house but my co-worker didn’t hear them,” she said. “Random people then began appearing in my dreams, accusing me of either killing or robbing them. Sometimes, I dreamt of blood and dodging bullets.”
The woman said her ancestors later warned her in her dreams.
“My late grandmothers warned me I was picking up spirits from those I was having sex with. They said I would be punished for their sins by death.”
The woman said she began to consult with izangoma and was told she was connecting with the spirits of some of her clients. She said she had to be cleansed a number of times.
She stopped doing sex work in 2016 and became a call centre agent.
Sangoma Nzama Maluleke said the woman had a calling and her ancestors were reaching out to her.
Constance Mathe, the National Co-ordinator of the Asijiki Coalition which advocates for the rights of sex workers, said she hasn’t come across cases of soul ties but purely cases of callings among magoshas.
