A FORMER acting judge is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Monday, 25 April, on a charge of sexual assault.
The judge, who cannot be named until he pleads, allegedly assaulted a female advocate last February.
AfriForum, that is helping the advocate to get justice, said its private prosecution unit made representations to Gauteng director of public prosecutions advocate Andrew Chauke last October, and it was only then that the National Prosecuting Authority decided to prosecute.
“The victim also approached the Bar Council, Johannesburg Society of Advocates and Legal Practice Council, but received little to no support from these bodies, which is disappointing,” said spokeswoman Chanté Kelder.
She added that AfriForum’s private prosecution unit, as well as the complainant, would be in court to monitor proceedings.
Asked if the assault took place in a courtroom or the judge’s chambers, Kelder said: “Although we cannot disclose the facts of the matter because the case is pending, we can confirm that the incident did not take place in court or the judge’s chambers.”
