INANDA residents are still confused after finding a municipal worker dead in his bakkie on Friday morning, 29 September.

Residents said the bakkie had parked in the same spot since Thursday afternoon, 28 September.

And in the morning, it was still parked there, and the worker inside was dead.

They said they didn't hear any gunshot or commotion during the night, so finding the man dead confuses them.

The body of an eThekwini municipal worker from the water and sanitation services unit was discovered in his bakkie at Etafuelni in Inanda, north of Durban on Friday.

The worker, Khumbulani Khumalo (51), the manager for community services in the water and sanitation unit, was killed while he was in a municipal bakkie in Inanda.

A resident told Daily Sun that this discovery has left them shocked and confused.

"Nobody heard or saw anything, but today, the man is dead," said the resident.

The Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesman Prem Balram said a passerby contacted them at about 5am after they made the discovery.

He said Rusa paramedics were immediately sent and on arrival, they found the deceased in the driver’s seat of a white Toyota Hilux double cab bakkie.

"His vehicle was still idling. Upon examination, he was found to have sustained two gunshot wounds to his head. According to a witness, the unmarked eThekwini municipal vehicle was seen parked at the same location since Thursday afternoon," he said.

Balram said the motive for the assassination has not been confirmed at this stage.

Meanwhile, the eThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has called on law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned while hunting the gunmen who killed the worker.

"At this stage, the motive for the killing is unknown. The city has dispatched senior officials at water and sanitation to provide necessary support to the family," he said.

Kaunda said the city urges anyone with information about this unfortunate incident to work with the police to bring the perpetrators to justice.

He extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and colleagues of the slain employee.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said cops in Inanda are investigating a case of murder after the body of a 51-year-old man was found alongside a car in the Etafulwni area in Inanda.

"The body had what looked like gunshot wounds. The motive for the killing is unknown, and circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated," said Netshiunda.
