GATVOL residents rolled up their sleeves to fix the main road leading to Emfuleni Local Municipality in the Vaal.

They said when it rains, no car can use the road, and pedestrians are forced to take off their shoes and walk in the water mixed with sewage.

Lazarus Koloi (43) from Tshepong in De Deur told Daily Sun that residents felt it was necessary to fix the road because the municipality had failed them.

He said they decided to fix the road with half bricks they got from a nearby unused mine.

Lazarus said the road also leads to the township.

He said the mayor of Emfuleni uses the bad road when he goes to his house, but he is not doing anything about it.

Lazarus said that there is a group of people in the township who have formed a forum that collects R20 from the residents to fix the road, but they are not doing that.

Mantoa Mokoena, a motorist in Tshepong, said that sewage and rain make driving very difficult, and this is the only entrance and exit to ekasi.

Emfuleni municipal spokesman Makhosonke Sangweni said 40 roads will repaired with the help of the Gauteng provincial government and some have already been fixed.
