WINNIE Mandela residents in Thembisa, Ekurhuleni deserve proper houses with flushing toilets.
This is the promise EFF president Julius Malema made when he visited the area on his campaign trail on Sunday, 28 April.
Malema, who came three hours later than the scheduled time, told hundreds of people who braved the heat that his government will improve the area.
“We want people of Winnie Mandela to have proper houses because there is no dignity without a house. A house must have a flushing toilet. No one must share a toilet. We want to bring the houses that restore the dignity of African people,” he said.
He said there was a lot of vacant land around Midrand and Kempton Park, but it wasn't used to build houses for people of Thembisa.
Malema said: “We all know that Thembisa existed because of landlessness in Alexandra. The reality's there is little urban human settlement planning in Gauteng.
“They don’t know how they are going to settle our people and give them proper houses because we still exist within the apartheid spatial planning,” he said.
He said elderly people would be prioritised for RDP houses because most of them have been on the waiting list since 1997.

He said the ANC government was giving people “glorified mkhukhus” because they didn't have flushing toilets inside.
He further promised that his government would provide proper roads, clean water, electricity, and streetlights.
Malema said the EFF MMCs were trying to fix Thembisa but they allegedly got resistance from the ANC tsotsis in the Ekurhuleni Municipality.
He said under the EFF, young people would get jobs irrespective of the political parties they support.
“We will give you jobs because when we take over government, we will not create less than four million jobs. The requirement will be a South African ID,” said Malema.
He said EFF would also raise social grants for gogos and mkhulus.
“We will give them R4 000 upwards because they are the ones taking care of many homes. If you give them money, they don’t play dice but buy maize meal for their family,” he said.
Children grant would increase to R1 000 per child.
“Let’s make sure that the ANC loses power in this municipality. Let’s make sure that on 29 May we take Gauteng. If we can take the province your lives will change,” said Malema.
