A 63-year-old gogo was arrested at Cape Town International Airport with a drug consignment worth R1,6 million.

Hawks spokeswoman Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani said the woman was bust on Saturday afternoon, 5 August.

Hani said at the time of the arrest, the gogo was to leave South Africa for Europe with 3,5kg of heroin.

She said the Hawks received the information that the woman arrived in the country and intended to smuggle drugs.

"The woman was arrested by the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau team together with Border Policing Unit Cape Town and Gauteng Crime Intelligence before boarding the Ethiopian Airlines flight.

"This is after information was received on Friday, 4 August that a suspected drug courier entered South Africa and will be taking drugs out on her departure,” Hani said.

She said the tip-off led to the discovery of narcotics in the suspect’s luggage before checking in.

The woman will appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court on 7 August on a charge of dealing drugs.
