POLICE are warning motorists to be vigilant as thugs are always getting a step ahead.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo, thugs use a new method of bumping cars on the rear end to force the driver to stop and examine the extent of the damage.

"The drivers will get out to assess the damage, and thugs would point them with guns and take their cars,” Masondo said.

This is a new method used by thugs in Duduza, Ekurhuleni.

He said the tsotsis hijacked a VW Tiago after they bumped into it with their BMW on 22 May.

"The driver of VW Tiago was anxious and got out of his car to assess the extent of the damage but only to be hijacked," Masondo said.

He said another driver was hijacked using the modus operandi on 27 May.

"The same BMW was used to hijack another car after it bumped into it.

"We urge motorists to be extremely careful and when bumped, they would rather drive and get to a safer place and call the police,” Masondo said.

Motorist Daniel Ngoza said this is scary because motorists may not differentiate the incidents.

"Someone might bump into it and only to find it was an honest but with things like, how are we going to know? It's just tricky and confusing," said another Oscar Mashinini.
