EKURHULENI cops have pounced on zama zamas.
The cops had an integrated illegal mining operation Shanela conducted in the Daveyton under the leadership of Ekurhuleni District Vispol commander, Colonel Alastair Subramanian.
Police spokeswoman Captain Neldah Sekgobela said the joint operation which included SAPS, EMPD, Gauteng Traffic and Home Affairs was a success.
Five suspects were arrested at Chris Hani informal settlement in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni on Tuesday, 12 September for illegal mining and for being undocumented.
“During the operation, cops confiscated four pendukas, a gas cylinder, three crushers, two bags of gold-bearing dust, four cutting torches, two garden tools and two buckets containing multiple steel balls.

"All the items were seized and handed over to the Daveyton Police Station for safekeeping," she said.
The five suspects appeared in the Daveyton Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 13 September and the case was postponed to 21 September.
Ekurhuleni district commissioner Major-General Anna Sithole applauded the efforts of the members in addressing the scourge of illegal mining in the district, and also appealed to the community to report such incidents if they're taking place in their areas.
