A COP and backyard dwellers were injured during a land grab altercation on Thursday, 22 June.

The Ekurhuleni Land Invasion unit was removing land invaders on a piece of land in Emaphuphen, Etwatwa.

But the invaders fought with the police.

And this resulted in rocks being thrown at a cop and several invaders injured by rubber bullets as the police took control of the situation.

The land grabbers, some of whom were allegedly EFF members, said they occupied the piece of land as they had no place to stay.

Lieutenant-Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said one person was arrested.

One of the leaders, Jones Masuku, said they occupied a piece of land on 16 June.

"They left us as we erected our shacks on Monday and Thursday but came now to destroy them," he said.

One woman, Given Sibeko, said she had been waiting for her RDP for a long time.

"Nothing is happening. That's why we decided to join others as they came here, and, sadly, we are denied land in our own country,” she said.

Some residents said they had been on the list and are now growing old without owning their places.

"There's a lot of corruption in housing. People jump queues because they have money," said a resident.

Angry backyard dwellers then blocked the road, saying they were not going anywhere. They vowed to continue occupying the space.

"They can take our structures, but we are going to stay here," vowed the backyard dwellers.

Lieutenant-Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said police are monitoring the situation.
