ECONOMIC Freedom Fighters (EFF) deputy president Floyd Shivambu has encouraged the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and other political parties to go on a massive voter education before the elections on 29 May.
He said 2024 is introducing a new electoral system with three ballots for the first time since 1994, and the same voter education held in 1994 should be held again this year.
“We all should go on a massive voter education to educate our people, especially those in the rural areas and areas that do not have access to digital media and communications. Let’s all go on a huge voter education,” he said.
Shivambu said that education should be similar to what was done prior to the 1994 elections, where they explain to the entire society how they vote on three ballots that appear on one of the ballots, which has two pages that must be flipped over.

“We must run a proper massive voters’ education. Specimens of ballot papers must be printed so we illustrate to people just how they are going to vote on the day of election day.
“Because if voters’ education is not properly conducted, it is going to lead to a lot of spoiled ballots or a lot of people who will make mistakes,” he said.
He said that they need to intensify voters’ education by all of us, but the IEC needs to take the lead in terms of conducting this.
Shivambu also called for broadcasters to assist in the education by showing people how they're going to vote in the election.
“This is not similar to how they voted in 1994, 1999, 2004 and in 2019. So, now we need to have a different way to deal with this. So, voter education is important,” he said.
