ROAD accidents are reported to have claimed 34 lives between the Western Cape and Gauteng during the Easter weekend.

According to News24, 16 people were reported to have been injured in those crashes.

On Friday, 15 April, Daily Sun ran a story about a horrific accident that claimed the lives of 11 people.

This after a Scania bus crashed into a Toyota minibus on the N1, near Leeu Gamka, Western Cape.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesman, Simon Zwane, said the crash happened at about 6am.

“The minibus was travelling from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape and apparently experienced a tyre failure. The minibus was pulled to the side.

“The bus travelling from Beaufort West towards Cape Town drove into the minibus,” Zwane said.

News24 reported that another accident took place on the R43 between Hermanus and Stanford.

Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works spokesperson, Jandré Bakker, said it was alleged that a bakkie overtook on a blind rise and against a barrier line.

It then crashed head-on into a Healthnet vehicle.

“Three people were killed and three seriously injured. Four more people lost their lives on our roads. Three of them were pedestrians,” Bakker told News24.

Meanwhile, Gauteng is reported to have recorded several crashes and fatalities since the beginning of the Easter Road Safety campaign on Thursday, 14 April.

Gauteng Traffic Police spokesman, Sello Maremane, said 16 road fatalities were recorded. Eight of the fatalities are of pedestrians

“The Gauteng Traffic Police extend their heartfelt condolences to the families and friends who lost their loved ones.

“We also wish a speedy recovery to all those who are currently receiving medical treatment due to injuries sustained in various crashes this Easter weekend,” Maremane added.
