A MAN from Khayelitsha, Cape Town, was shot and injured after he attempted to rob an SBV money truck guard of his firearm – using a knife.
The incident happened on Monday, 11 April, while the guards were delivering cash at a bank at Nonqubela Mall in Site B, Khayelitsha.
A witness said she and other people had to run for cover as the guard shot the suspect.
“The man walked straight to the guard and stabbed him with a knife while trying to wrestle his gun away.
“People were shocked because it’s unimaginable to rob a person with a firearm using a knife.
“The guard shot him in the back and he fell to the ground, bleeding.
“This robber is a number one fool. Who robs an armed SBV guard using a knife?” the witness said.
Police spokesman Colonel Athlenda Mathe confirmed the incident, adding that no money was taken during the incident.
“The SBV money truck was busy with a delivery at FNB.
“The guard with the money bag was already inside the bank while the other one, who was clearing the surrounding area, was outside.
“A suspect, who was also in the vicinity, tried to attack the guard who was outside. The suspect stabbed the guard once on his shoulder,” said Mathe.
She said that after the attack on the guard, the man tried to take his gun away but the guard resisted.
“The guard managed to get hold of his rifle and shot the suspect once in his lower back,” said Mathe.
