WHEN Dumisani Mabaso was called to stop his brother Mizikayifani Mabaso fighting with his girlfriend, he didn’t hesitate.

But little did he know a family tragedy was about to unfold.

Soon both brothers would be lying in the cold mortuary. Dumisani from stab wounds, the other after he committed suicide.

According to family member Sikhumbuzo Mabaso, (49) Dumisani arrived at the house in Mvulwane Village in Greytown, KZN on Saturday and tried to stop Mizikayifani. The two brothers started fighting and Mizikayifani stabbed Dumisani.

“From what we are told, he didn’t stab him intentionally. He was drunk he didn’t even see that he had stabbed Dumisani. After the fight he went home to sleep without knowing that he had stabbed his brother,” he said.


He said when Mizikayifani woke up early on Sunday morning he saw there were many people in their yard.

“He was told that he had stabbed his brother to death,” said Sikhumbuzo.

“Mizikayifani disappeared from the homestead and after few hours he was found dead. He had hanged himself in the nearby bushes.”

He said there were only the two brothers.

“Now both of them are gone. Dumisani went to help and lost his life. Mizikayifani didn’t stab him intentionally but now he is also gone,” he said.

He said they are planning to have a funeral for both of them on Sunday.

The KZN cops spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed that charges of murder and inquest are being investigated by Ematimatolo SAPS. Both matters are still under investigation.
