A SUSPECTED drunk driver is in hot water after he drove into an accident scene, injuring a traffic cop who was attending a scene where a pedestrian was knocked down in the middle of the road.
Mobility MEC Daylin Mitchell warned drunk drivers on Monday when he issued the statistics of weekend road incidents.
He said the speeding driver drove through the cones which the officers had placed on the road to secure the scene, and collided with stationary traffic cop vehicles. One traffic officer was injured and transported to hospital. The driver was immediately arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident happened on the N2 near Symphony Way bridge on Saturday night.
“I want to send a stern warning to all drivers who are speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, that the law will take its course and come back to bite you. Speeding is a serious concern, and irresponsible, and dangerous drivers will be dealt with,” Mitchell said.
The MEC said it is everyone’s business to ensure that roads are safe for all road users.

“I urge everyone to play a role in improving road safety for all road users whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, passengers or drivers. Motorists are to be vigilant at all times on the road, and pedestrians to make themselves visible to motorists, especially at night and in the early morning,” he said.
Among other arrests, Western Cape Traffic Services bust 36 people for drink and driving. Three people were arrested for reckless and negligent driving while two others were arrested for speeding.
Mitchell said 18 accidents between 12 and 18 September claimed 19 lives, in which 10 were pedestrians, five passengers, three motorcyclists and one driver.
