A DRIVER affiliated to the inDrive app has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a passenger.
Nompumelelo Mkize alleged the driver moered her after she requested a ride to Auckland Park, Joburg.
Following the incident on 15 October, Nompumelelo told Daily Sun that after the driver picked her up in the Joburg CBD, they had a dispute over change, which left her bruised and missing a tooth.
An investigation conducted by the SunTeam found that the car belonged to Mpho Maumela, who refused to comment when contacted.
Gender-based violence activist and founder of the Tshegofatsa Rona Home in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Cynthia Dinalane, contacted Nompumelelo after reading her story in Daily Sun on 19 October. She helped her to open a case.
On Sunday, 30 October Kempton Park police located Maumela. He agreed to visit Auckland Park Police Station with the driver but failed to show up.
The following day, the driver handed himself over to the Brixton police and was taken into custody.
Brixton police spokeswoman Jeanette Backhoff said a case of assault was opened. Nompumelelo said although she is still recovering from the attack, she’s happy and can’t wait to face her alleged attacker in court.
