OWNING a car for scholar transport is a dream that seems too far from becoming a reality for Drengo Matlou (32).

The man from Greenfield in Hammanskraal, Tshwane, has come up with a plan.

He transports pupils on his bicycle, and this plan puts food on the table for him.

Drengo transports pupils to and from local schools, and parents pay him R7 per trip.

He wakes up in the morning to take the first two pupils, and then the next two and later one.

He said luckily for him, the school is not that far.

"In the morning, I collect them from their homes, and then in the afternoon, I'm already there. They wait for me to pick up the first load and then come back for others," he said.

"My dream is to own a car one day to transport children to school, but as a person, you have to start somewhere," he said.

Durango said when he started, it was not easy, but as they saw how determined he was, they started supporting him.

"Mine is to keep my bicycle roadworthy and safe for children not to get injured," he said.

He has been transporting pupils since 2023.

"I'm also saving a little from the money I make. One day, I want to get myself a small car, and I will grow from there," he said.

Parents of the kids who use the bicycle transport say Drengo is readily available.

"We don't have a scholar transport, and children have to walk to school. What Drengo does assures me that my child will arrive at school safe and not tired, and later they will return home safely," said parent Martha Selloane.
