A HYDE Park Secondary School teacher’s body was found hanging on the sports grounds on Wednesday, 6 March.

“According to information at our disposal, the educator was allegedly found hanging on the sports grounds of the school on Wednesday morning. Paramedics certified him dead on arrival,” said Gauteng Department of Education Spokesman, Steve Mabona.

In another school tragedy in Joburg, at the Jeppe High School for Boys, a Grade 11 pupil died on Tuesday, 5 March after participating in a rugby match.

“A Grade 11 boy pupil from Jeppe High School for Boys in Joburg died on Tuesday, 5 March 2024, after a rugby match against Hoërskool Die Anker in Brakpan.

“It's alleged that the pupil was not feeling well after the match. Paramedics on site tried to stabilise him and called an ambulance for further medical assistance. Unfortunately, the pupil succumbed shortly after the ambulance arrived,” he said.

“Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is deeply saddened by the passing of a Grade 12 educator from Hyde Park Secondary School in Joburg on Wednesday, 6 March 2024. We're deeply disheartened by these tragic incidents and wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the families of the departed, as well as their respective school communities,” he said.

Mabona said a psycho-social support team has been sent to both schools.

“Our Psycho-Social Support Unit have been dispatched to both schools for necessary trauma counselling and support. We're grateful to the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) for also availing their services for additional support at these schools,” he said.

Mabona said the police are currently investigating circumstances surrounding the incident.
