They had no way of knowing death was waiting for them in the shape of a security guard with a handgun.
“HE FIRED WARNING SHOTS AND WE RAN - BUT THAT MAN WAS IN A KILLING MOOD!” SAID BONGANI.
The brothers, Bongani (24) and Bafana (21) Mayisa, heard the shots being fired behind them and they ran for their lives.
Bongani managed to get home uninjured, but Bafana didn’t make it. Minutes later, Bafana was shot dead, allegedly by a security company guard contracted to Transnet in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni.
Bafana died just a few metres away from his horrified brother last Tuesday, 25 October.
“The guard fired warning shots into the air and we ran to get to our home, which is not far from the railway,” he said.
But as they were about to go into their house, the guard fired more shots.
A bullet hit Bafana in the back of the head. He collapsed and died.
Their mum Emma Mayisa (60) said she ran to her dying son.
“I asked the guard why they were doing this. But he didn’t answer. He told me to call an ambulance and walked back to his bakkie,” she said.
A devastated Bongani said network coverage was a problem in the area and they had to go to high-lying areas to use their phones. “If only the guy knew what kind of family we come from, we were raised properly and we don’t steal from anyone. He lied and said we were throwing stones at the train, which is an insult.
He’s just trying to cover himself. Why would we throw stones? We’re not thugs,” he said.
