SEANEGO Attorneys have been appointed to investigate circumstances that led to the drowning of two pupils from Daveyton Skills School on Monday, 15 April.

The legal firm has been given seven days to complete its investigation. Following its investigation, it'll present an investigative report with the findings and recommendations for implementation.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited families of Siphamandla Peterson (15) and Sibusiso Sibiya (17) on Friday, 26 April, to introduce the firm.

The two pupils drowned during a discipline camp held in Centurion, Tshwane.

Speaking at a media briefing held at Daveyton Skills School, MEC Chiloane said so far one teacher has been served with a suspension letter.

"The process has started with a teacher, but for the integrity of the process, no names will be mentioned," said Chiloane.

The legal firm is tasked to investigate the following:

 • What were the circumstances surrounding the incident?

• Was approval for the trip granted by the Department?

• Who were the persons responsible for the supervision of learners?

•Where were responsible personnel or educators at the time of the incident?

•Did the school and the campsite have insurance?

•How was the conduct of the educators, the School Management Team, and the principal?

•Was the incident reported to the Department?

•What was the cause of the death of the two pupils?

•Is the Department liable or not?

•Was there any omission on the part of the Department and its officials?

•Was counselling provided to learners and their families?

•What steps were taken by the Department to address this matter?

"Allegations of abuse will be investigated as pupils who attended the camp will be interviewed."

The MEC added: "As soon as the report is finalised, we'll ensure all recommendations are acted upon. In the event of delays, we'll interact with the families and relevant stakeholders accordingly.

"We're not saying recommendations will close the gap of losing a child. We're truly sorry about what had happened and wish this not to happen again."
