CRIME in Vosloorus is escalating.
This was revealed by the District Commissioner of Ekurhuleni, Major General Anna Sithole, on Friday, 28 April, during a police operation held in Vosloorus.
She said crimes such as assault, robbery, house robberies and car hijackings occur between Fridays and Sundays.
Sithole said they brought all the forces in the area, which includes Ekurhuleni Metro Police, Siyabangena Patrollers and Home Affairs.
The roadblock was conducted at the George Makhubela Road near Vosloorus Police Copshop to check for stolen vehicles and search for illegal firearms and stolen property while also checking for drunk drivers and cars that are not roadworthy.
She said: “Crime in this area is a problem.
“45 people were arrested for various offences like drinking and driving, wanted suspects, drug dealers and illegal immigrants during the operation which started on Thursday, 27 April.
“Two illegal shebeens have been closed by the liquor team, and the liquor was confiscated,” she said.
During the roadblock operation, a female motorist with two female passengers didn’t want her car searched.
She exchanged words with cops saying she was rushing to church and wanted her car not to be searched.
“We have legal documents that permit us to search people. If someone doesn’t want to be searched, we can arrest them for interfering with the police while doing their job," Sithole said.
She said they must ensure that citizens abide by South African laws and are responsible for ensuring that everyone in the vicinity lives by those rules.
“We all know that weekends are a problem, especially now is a long weekend, people are travelling to other provinces, and we will make sure that when we leave Vosloorus, we leave it with zero reports of serious crimes," she added.
