The police in Limpopo have already arrested 271 undocumented foreign nationals during the Festive Season operations that were conducted from 18 December to date.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said these undocumented foreign nationals were mainly arrested during roadblocks and stop and search operations that were conducted around the Province.

Cops said that that 54 of these undocumented nationals were arrested on 31 December at a roadblock along the N1 road south of Polokwane.

Mojapelo said during the same period, 237 Shebeens were closed, 94 licensed liquor premises were charged for non-compliance with the Liquor Act and 6 of them were closed.

"As part of these operations, the police also occasionally conduct joint operations to prevent cross border crimes including the smuggling of stolen goods from and into the country such as illicit cigarettes and vehicles," said Mojapelo.

He added that illicit cigarettes worth R2.2 million were also seized at a roadblock that was also visited by the Deputy Minister of Police Mr Cassel Mathale, the MEC of Transport and Community Safety Mr Namane Dickson Masemola and the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, along the N1 road south of Polokwane.
