FOUR suspects were arrested in a police raid in Gqeberha on Wednesday, 28 December, including a police captain.
Cops pounced on a group of suspects believed to be behind the torching of the general’s home in New Brighton, Eastern Cape.
According to Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, the suspects were arrested after being found in possession of firearms, ammunition and a stun grenade.
“Cases of arson have been reported at a police senior manager’s residence, resulting in the arrests. A preliminary investigation revealed that an officer, stationed in the crime intelligence unit, is associated with the incident. During the incident, no one was inside the house, and it was seriously damaged,” he said.
He said investigations led to the recovery of three firearms, live rounds of ammunition, stun grenades and an amount of R205 600 in cash from a house the officer lived in, also in New Brighton.
“The captain has been charged with arson as well as possession of firearms, ammunition and grenades while the others are being investigated for possession of firearms, ammunition and stun grenades,” Kinana said.

Lieutenant-General Nomthetheleli Mene expressed disappointment at the conduct of the arrested officer.
“Police members who connive with criminals are a disgrace to the organisation, and must be held accountable for their actions,” she said.
The four suspects, aged between 27 and 40, appeared in the New Brighton Magistrates Court on Thursday, and the case was postponed to 5 January.
The captain remains in custody, while the other suspects have been released by the court for finalisation of the investigation.
