COP and ‘Rape victim’ behind bars

accreditation

A WOMAN (33) is due to appear in the Kriel Magistrates Court for a formal bail application on Thursday.

The 33-year-old along with a police sergeant were arrested on Thursday and both appeared in the same court on Friday, 29 April.

They’re facing various charges including corruption, extortion, defeating the ends of justice, theft as well as contravention of the Immigration Act.

Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the woman claimed she was raped by her male friend and apparently extorted money from him, an amount of R1 500, instead of reporting the matter to cops.

“The matter was brought to the attention of a sergeant, who works as a detective at Kriel SAPS and he too reportedly demanded an amount of R8 000 from the said male friend. The male friend then made a payment of R1 000 to the said member who then demanded more, prompting him to report the matter. Police arrived as the cop was being paid more money and swiftly arrested him as well as the woman. Police discovered during their investigation that the woman is originally from Eswatini and was in South Africa illegally as she did not have a passport hence a charge of contravention of the Immigration Act was added.”

He said the cop was granted R2 000 bail during the court appearance while the woman was remanded in custody and will appear again on Thursday, 5 May.
