THE husband of a community leader from Vosho squatter camp in Samora Machel, Cape Town, is lucky to be alive.

This after angry community members allegedly set his shack on fire on Tuesday, 9 August, while he and his five children were asleep.

Another community leader’s shack was burnt on Wednesday, 10 August.

Thembalomzi Tyekana (36) said he smelled petrol and the next thing, fire was eating his shack.

“I took my kids out of the shack and could not save anything,” he said.

Thembalomzi said community members warned him that his wife, Nomuhle Mngakana (35), must leave the area as she and another community leader allegedly sold plots but never declared the money to the community. Both Nomuhle and Lungile Bonga (53) denied the allegation.

Police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg said six people aged between 29 and 45 were arrested for malicious damage to property. They’re expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Monday, 15 August.
