A SIMILAR picture of what happened on 14 July 2022 was seen yet again at the Durban CBD on Friday, 11 August 2023.

This as looters ran across the streets of Durban carrying clothes in their hands.

People looted a clothing shop in the CBD. It is alleged that on Friday evening looters broke open a roller door of a clothing shop, then stole clothes before escaping.

Some people were scared to join the looters but they watched as the looters ran away with clothes in their arms. Some spectators allegedly asked the looters to share some of the stolen clothes with them.

A resident in the CBD, Khanyi Dlamini (33), told Daily Sun that she was sleeping when she heard people screaming.

"I peeped through the window and saw people running in different directions. I saw them carrying clothes and I realized that they were looting," she said.

She said she didn't want to be part of it because she didn't condone the criminal act.

"We are still recovering from last year's looting and now they want to take us back," she said.

Another resident Skhumbuzo Mtolo (39) said in 2022 people said they wanted former president Jacob Zuma to be released from prison. He now wondered what the reason was for looting again.

"I think they heard that Zuma might be arrested again and they planned to go looting. This time Zuma was released but they still went ahead and looted, this is not right anymore. These people must be caught and arrested," he said.

However, following this recent looting incident cops are busy putting together pieces of evidence to identify possible suspects.

KZN cops spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police in Durban Central responded to reports of a looting at a clothing store in the Durban CBD on Friday night.

"Upon arrival the roller door of the store was broken and clothing items, as well as other valuables, were reportedly looted from the shop," he said.

Netshuinda said police are still investigating the matter and as a result, no one has been arrested yet.

"The motive of the looting is unknown, however police believe that it was just pure criminality and those found to be responsible for the crime will be met with the wrath of the law," he said.
