A CITY of uMhlathuze worker is on the run after allegedly killing his colleague who is believed to be his estranged wife.

It's said that Jabulisiwe Mthethwa (42), who works at the City of Uhlathuze's Occupation Clinic in Alton in Richards Bay, KZN, was gunned down by the alleged husband while on duty on Wednesday, 22 November.

City spokesman Bongani Gina said at about 10am, Jabulisiwe fatally shot multiple times while performing her duties.

"The perpetrator, identified as her estranged husband and also a city employee within the Roads unit of the Infrastructure Services Department, entered the clinic premises and engaged in a brief conversation with the victim before committing this heinous act," said Gina.

He said that the attacker, who was armed with a gun, cornered Jabulisiwe and fired three shots, two to the chest and one to the neck, resulting in fatal injuries.

"Despite the swift response of paramedics and law enforcement, Jabulisiwe succumbed to her injuries on-site. The suspect subsequently left a note at the clinic's reception desk and fled the scene in a municipal truck, which was later found abandoned in Ngwelezane outside Empangeni after being tracked," said Gina.

City manager Nkosenye Zulu, who rushed to the scene, released clinic workers early and committed to providing necessary trauma counselling for those who witnessed the tragedy.

City of uMhlathuze Mayor Xolani Ngwezi has condemned this senseless act of violence, extending heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.

"The City of uMhlathuze is cooperating fully with law enforcement in their investigation, and we urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing the perpetrator to justice. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Mthethwa during this difficult time," said Ngwezi.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Richardsbay police have opened a murder case for investigation after a 42-year-old woman was shot and fatally wounded by a suspect at the municipality offices in Alton, Richardsbay, on Wednesday, 22 November.

"The suspects left what looked like a note detailing why he killed the woman at that spot, and police tracked his vehicle to his homestead in Empangeni. A search at his house resulted in the recovery of a firearm whose serial number was filed off. A search for the suspect is underway," he said.
