THE City of Joburg has refuted the allegations of R2,6m year-end event expenditure.
This comes after the DA councillors raised concerns on rumours that the city was planning on splashing millions on the end-year event.
The Member Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Group Corporate and Shared Services (GCSS), Loyiso Masuku, has placed it on record that no funds of the city have been spent on the rumoured R2,6m year-end event and long service awards ceremony for qualifying city employees.
She said as the MMC when he became aware of the plans for such an event, he immediately requested that the plans be suspended and relook at how they could best appreciate and celebrate their employees, given the current financial and economic challenges that face the city and its residents.

She further said that had DA councillors sought to verify the facts of the matter by approaching the office of the MMC, they would have been provided with factual information and made aware that no expenditure has been incurred and that the matter has been referred back to the administration for reconsideration.
Masuku said this would eliminate the misinformation and peddling of falsehoods by faceless employees feeding into political squabbles.
She said that it's critical to re-emphasise that MMCs are neither privy nor party to the procurement processes of the city and that these are solely an administrative process undertaken without the participation and knowledge of the MMC.
