IN 2023, Hammanskraal in Tshwane was hit by cholera which claimed lives.

The bacterial disease has resurfaced again in Mzansi, with two confirmed cases detected in Limpopo this year.

Both cases are reportedly imported from Zimbabwe.

Jacqueline Matlatle (57), a resident of Hammanskraal, lost her sister Nthabiseng Legwabe (49) to cholera in May 2023.

Now, with news of the outbreak in Limpopo, Jacqueline said they are scared that more lives will be lost, and people will get sick as they still don't have clean water.

"We are scared and hope that cholera will not attack again and cause more damage and panic," she said.

Jacqueline said when she heard about the cholera cases in Limpopo, she prayed that they must not be affected again. She said her concerns are the little children who might drink water from the taps.

Another resident, Lungi Thobejane (49), said they wish for the disease to be stopped and controlled.

"We can't afford to lose more families because of cholera. We don't want to die from it again," she said.

Jeffrey Nyathikazi, the Ward 74 Sanco zonal secretary in Hammanskraal, said they are scared and don't even trust the trucks that provide water.

"Our water is a great concern to us and it's easy for us to contaminate diseases like cholera," he said.

Tshwane Health MMC Rina Marx said the city remains on alert for possible cholera outbreak.

"With the anticipation of community members returning after travelling during the festive period and reopening of factories and schools, we're on high alert. Cholera is contracted through water or food contaminated with the cholera bacteria 'vibrio cholera' and early treatment is critical," said Marx.

Deputy health minister Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has urged members of the public to be vigilant and maintain personal hygiene after the confirmed cases of cholera in Limpopo.

"The country remains on high alert of possible imported cholera cases from Zimbabwe, which is currently battling the outbreak of the disease which has so far claimed over 200 lives," said Dhlomo.
