A FATHER is devastated after his daughter was stabbed with an empty bottle and died on New Year’s Eve in Delft, Cape Town.
Thembelani Wright (49) said his daughter, Owethu Chagu (16), who was supposed to be in matric in 2024, was allegedly stabbed with a bottle by a 28-year-old woman.
It's alleged that the two were fighting over a 21-year-old man, who is the father of Owethu’s two-month-old baby. The man is the woman's ex-boyfriend.
Thembelani said he doesn't know what happened, but they had just celebrated the new year when some people knocked on his door. He didn’t want to open, but when they said Owethu had been stabbed, he quickly jumped out of bed.
He was told she was already taken to hospital and he rushed there, but his daughter had already died. He only managed to see an injured girl who was stabbed together with Owethu.
“What I heard is that one of the girls who were with Owethu argued with the lady. Owethu was trying to stop the argument and she was caught up in the fight and got stabbed. We don’t know what happened, but it appears there was a grudge between Owethu and her killer,” he said.
"I was shocked and hurt. My daughter went out to celebrate the new year with her cousins but suddenly she is dead. This is so difficult."

A family member of the suspected killer told Daily Sun that the woman was defending herself as Owethu and her friends were attacking her. The family member said Owethu and her friends allegedly attacked the woman over Owethu’s baby daddy.
“She told us that a group of girls went to her house and when they didn’t find her, they looked for her and found her at her friend's house. The issue of the boyfriend came up and a fight ensued.
"They allegedly provoked her before beating her up until she fell. While on the ground, she found a bottle and stabbed the girls, injuring them. Unfortunately, one died. It's all about Owethu’s baby daddy who used to date my cousin,” she said.
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said Delft cops responded to a complaint in the early hours of Monday morning, 1 January.
"Upon arrival at a local medical facility, they found the body of a female aged 16 who sustained multiple stab wounds,” said Swartbooi.
The suspect will appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 10 January for bail application.
