A TAXI driver parked on the side of Sheffield Road in Philippi and started chatting with a friend when he was ambushed and killed.

Residents said two gunmen fired shots at the driver, killing him at the scene. But the friend managed to escape unharmed.

“They wanted him, and they didn’t bother to chase the friend. They wanted the driver dead. They shot him at close range in broad daylight before disappearing in between shacks,” said a resident from the area.

When the SunTeam arrived at the scene, the taxi owner said she also received a call about the shooting, and she was also shocked about the killing.

She said her taxi was only for ferrying staff to work and pupils to school.

“I do not know who wanted him dead and for what reasons. I’m equally shocked like everyone,” she said.

Another resident said the driver tried to open the door, but it was too late as the killers targeted his head.

“He just died while sitting in front of the steering wheel. It was a sad scene to witness a human being killed like an animal,” said a 38-year-old man from the area.

Western Cape police spokeswoman, Anelisiwe Manyana, said Philippi East cops had opened a murder docket, and the case was under investigation.

“Philippi East police are investigating a murder case following a shooting incident on Sunday, 5 November, at Sheffield Road. According to reports, police attended to a shooting complaint and upon arrival, they found the body of a man who sustained a gunshot wound to his body," she said.

“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested. Anyone with information regarding this incident is kindly requested to contact CrimeStop on 08600 10111."
