According to police spokesman Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, the suspects ambushed a cop van that was on patrol in Nyanga on Monday, 12 June 2023.

“Reports suggest that the men entered the shopping centre, pretending to be customers, threatening the staff and robbing them at gunpoint of cash. As the suspects fled the scene, they noticed a patrol vehicle from Nyanga SAPS at the entrance with four occupants.

“They reacted and fired numerous gunshots at the police members, seriously injuring three of them. The members were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The suspects who fled the scene are yet to be arrested,” said Van Wyk.

This is not the first time this year where law enforcement officers have been attacked while doing their job.
