ON Monday morning, 7 August a man was shot dead on the N2 in Cape Town near the International Airport in Borcherds Quarry not far from Nyanga.
Several taxi drivers were arrested after blocking the N2 with their taxis. There are reports of public violence in a number of townships. On the N2, a Golden Arrow bus was set on fire, while in Phillipi, a vehicle was set on fire near the police academy.
On Sunday, 6 August, Site C Plaza, a shopping centre in Khayelitsha, was set alight at night. Sassa vehicles were set on fire at Kuyasa Library, also in Khaylitsha.

Khaya Kama, the Site C Councillor, confirmed the incident. He warned commuters on Facebook not to enter Site C as vehicles were being stoned.
Western Cape police spokeswoman Novela Potelwa said police were deployed in response to the taxis that blocked the Airport Approach Road, leading to Cape Town International Airport.
She said one person was shot and three others injured after a motorist was pelted with stones at Airport Approach. Potelwa said the driver responded to the attack by firing several shots.
“As a result, there was one dead and three others injured. A murder and attempted murder cases are being investigated. The identity of the deceased person is yet to be determined,” said Potelwa.
The violence started on Thursday night, 3 August after taxis under Santaco engaged on a stay away, leaving commuters stranded.
Santaco deputy secretary Nceba Enge said the stay away will continue until Wednesday, 9 August.
