MATRICS were able to sit for their first exam without interruption at Kanyekanye High School in eDumbe, KZN, on Monday.
But calls for tight security measures at the school are mounting as there is growing fear that the exams might be disrupted.
This after a class was allegedly torched by unknown people on Friday or the early hours of Saturday.
Members of the School Governing Body (SGB) found a class on fire on Saturday.
SGB member, Dumisani Nkosi, said: “When we got there, one class was totally destroyed and the fire was starting to eat up the second class. Luckily, we were able to put the fire out before it could destroy furniture.”
He said the problem is that the security guard was hired by the department and only works during the day.
“The school is badly vandalised because there is no guard at night so criminals do as they please,” he said.
Ward Councillor Musawenkosi Mkhwanazi said residents and the SGB met with department officials on Monday to seek a solution. The National Freedom Party called for urgent intervention from the Department of Education in the province.

KZN Education spokesman Muzi Mahlambi said the department was made aware of the incident and Education MEC Mbali Frazer condemns such acts in schools.
About the security at night, Mahlambi said: “Once people convince themselves that what they are doing is right, nothing can stop them.”
