accreditation

EASTERN Cape police are investigating a case of murder after a 37-year-old man was shot and killed by cable thieves in Kamesh on Monday, 27 September.

According to Captain Andre Beetge, community members were busy doing street patrols at 8.30am and found three suspects burning cables in an empty house on Moffat Street.

“They confiscated the cables and then the three suspects fled from the scene. The patrollers were running after them when one of the suspects turned around and fired several shots at them, wounding the victim, the 37-year-old Bernard Christoffels, several times,” Beetge said.

Beetge said the victim died on the spot due to his wounds.

He said a murder case was registered at Kamesh Police Station.

“Kamesh police attending to the scene made further follow-ups, and shortly after arrested two male suspects and confiscated one pistol with five rounds of ammunition that was in their possession. They were detained for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, but further investigation will be done to determine their link to the murder,” Beetge added.

The two suspects, aged 19 and 28, will appear in the Kariega Magistrates Court on 29 September to face the charges against them.
