THE longest serving monarch Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96.
In a tweet, the Royal Family said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
On April 21, 1926, Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born in London.
No one expected her to be Queen at the time, as she was third in line to the throne after her uncle and father.
She devoted her life to serving her country and the Commonwealth during her record-breaking reign.
She became Queen in 1952 at the age of 25, when her father, King George VI, died.
The Queen's reign saw 15 different prime ministers, from Sir Winston Churchill to Liz Truss.
