PARENTS from Moeka Village in Moretele, North West, are worried about their kids who are addicted to nyaope and crystal meth.
After the parents gathered on Sunday, 4 September to discuss the problem, they agreed that a rehab centre must be build in their area.
They said they don’t want children to be homeless and suffer as no household wants to live with addicts.
They said as government was doing less about their situation, they’ve decided to see to it that there was a recreation and rehab centre.
Resident Johannes Tshabalala (42), from Shihlobo Organisation, said they wanted to deal with substance abuse, but were not getting enough support from partners.
“I have called everyone around the community so we can come up with a solution,” he said.
According to Tshabalala, they will meet again on 17 September to go to the local police station to raise their demands.
“I was at 12 Apostolic Church and was touched when I heard a message about nyaope people,” he said.
Tshabalala said he was still looking for a place so that they could build a rehab centre.
“What I want is to solve the drug problem and give young people a second chance in life,” he said.
David Mokgatlhe (35) said drugs were affecting the community because addicts steal from people when they don’t have money.
Sophie Rampau (53) said her two boys smoke nyaope and crystal meth, while another was fired from work after stealing.
“This is affecting my health.”
Maria Kekana (63) said her son (27) is addicted to nyaope and steals from the house.
“He even stole church money which was meant to buy candles,” she said.
Julia Gwebu (49) said her son smokes dagga.
“He steals Sassa cards and withdraws money to buy drugs,” she said.
“We need help so the kids can go to rehab.”
