Big snakes and stray cows live with the dead

accreditation

THE Thulamahashe Cemetery in Mpumalanga has now become home to big snakes and stray cows.

And some of the graves are damaged by the cows.

Worried families are blaming the Bushbuckridge Municipality for the snakes and the damaged graves.

Rirhandzu Khoza said: “There were workers and security guards in the cemetery who looked after the graves.

“But the municipality removed them without our knowledge. The same municipality also failed to fix the broken gates. Stray cows walk around freely and damage our loves ones’ graves.”

Donny Mathebula said: “We came to clean up the grave on Easter weekend. But we ran out after we spotted a giant snake slithering in the grass. We’re not safe going there.”

Security guards at the nearby Public Works government garage and agricultural offices confirmed the snake problem.

Bushbuckridge Municipality spokesman Clayton Khosa said: “Cemeteries in all 293 townships are our responsibility and we are in the process of re-fencing and cleaning them up.”
