POLICE have warned people to be vigilant of a Toyota Quantum advertised for sale online.
According to cops, the car is not for sale as it is driven by thugs who want to steal from prospective buyers.
The Rietgat police have urged community members to be vigilant when responding to online advertisements.
Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said: “This warning comes after a few cases of fraud and theft with a similar modus operandi have been opened at Rietgat Police Station. In these cases, the prospective buyers responded to an online advertisement of a Toyota Quantum being for sale.”
He said most of these buyers agreed to meet the “seller” near a tavern in Soshanguve and after prospective buyers transferred the money into the seller’s account, the suspect would then borrow the buyer’s phone to make a call and minutes later leave with the buyer’s phone.
“The buyers are then left stranded without a vehicle and cellphone,” said Masondo.
He said anyone who has information on the crime being committed in their area is urged to contact their nearest police station, CrimeStop on 08600 10111 or alternatively leave an anonymous tip-off on the MySAPS App.
