IT was not their day!
Fourteen armed suspects came in a sedan and three trucks (horses) to hook three trailers that were loaded with copper on Saturday, 14 April but cops arrived unannounced.
Shooting ensued between the police and the suspects, but the police came out strong to foil the robbery.
Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said police arrested twelve of the fourteen-armed gang members and recovered firearms in Benoni, Ekurhuleni on Saturday at approximately 3:30pm.
Masondo said police were alerted about a business robbery in progress at a transport company. "Members from Highway Patrol, Johannesburg Flying Squad and K9 proceeded to the scene where they were met with gunshots from about twelve armed men.
"Police responded and a shootout ensued.Twelve suspects were arrested and five unlicensed firearms were recovered."Preliminary investigation suggests that about fourteen armed men arrived in a sedan and three trucks (horses) where they held the security guards at gunpoint."Masondo said the suspects then hooked trailers that were loaded with copper.
"Police and private security guards arrived and intercepted the gang while still at the promises, resulting in a shootout and arrest of suspects."
Suspects who were arrested are expected to appear in court this week for business robbery. Meanwhile cops are hunting for the other two suspects that escaped.
