ANGRY Soweto community members took to the streets and blocked the roads in Phiri using stones and rocks to prevent cars and taxis from passing.

This comes after they marched to Protea Magistrates Court on Monday, 14 August to demand justice for 26-year-old Mpho Msauli.

Mpho was allegedly shot and killed for refusing a romantic proposal by a passenger who was in a Toyota Quantum taxi.

The matter was postponed to Tuesday, 15 August, as requested by the Quantum driver's lawyer so he can be available.

The angry residents concluded that the Soweto Taxi Services (STS) might have a hand in hiring a lawyer for the suspect.

While the residents were busy barricading the roads, STS members came out in numbers and removed the stones from the roads.

Mpho's uncle, Nhlanhla Tshabalala told the community members that the arrested person will work with the state and point out the person who committed the crime.

STS Marshall Vincent Ndamane told Daily Sun that they did not condone what happened to Mpho.

“It is unfortunate that a girl has died and was unfortunately killed by one of our own. The community took their anger to the streets and today they are doing the very same thing, preventing us from working.

“Why are they closing the streets just because the arrested person has a lawyer? What has happened is very painful, but life must go on. These are our people, and we live off them because they are our commuters,” said Vincent.

He further said they supported the community and cried with them.

Mpho's sister, Refiloe Tshabalala said they were broken and disappointed that the case didn’t proceed while they had hopes that they would find closure on why their sister was killed.

“If the suspect has a lawyer, then it means STS is the one paying. We are shutting down the roads because this is where they make money.”

Mpho was shot and killed on Saturday, 29 July, when she was walking home with her friend allegedly by a passenger who was in a Quantum after she refused his romantic proposal.
