ANGRY parents closed a local school after allegedly finding out that it wasn't being run properly.

The parents protested outside Makheala Primary School in Boshakge Village near Bolobedu in Limpopo on Thursday, 19 October. They alleged that their kids were not being taught properly.

The angry parents claimed that since the schools reopened in September, the kids have been sent home as early as 10am. Parent Mapula Boshakge (36) told Daily Sun they had never seen a school operate until 10am.

"This is the reason most of our children can't read and write. It's because they don’t get enough time to learn," she said.

She claimed that every time they ask their children why they came home early, they're told that they were dismissed after getting food from the feeding scheme.

"School starts at 7.20am, which means they're only taught for three hours a day. They go to school to eat and then come back home," she said.

The parents said they waited outside the school for the principal to get answers. But the principal was nowhere to be found. They claimed that they had been looking for the principal since September, but to no avail.

They also claimed that the teachers come to work in shifts.

Another concerned parent, Mpho Malatgi (29), said: "The school has four teachers but only one teacher comes to school every day. How can one teacher take care of more than 200 pupils?"

They also complained about a Grade R teacher who they claimed always comes to school late.

Another parent said: "We're now demanding the dismissal of the teacher and the principal. We believe things will go back to normal because now our children are being deprived of their right to education."

Education department spokesman Mike Maringa said they had taken note of the allegations.

"We've advised the affected group to approach the district office with the matter," he said.
