ANC’s eThekwini regional secretary Musa Nciki and his bodyguard, Ivan Khoza, made their first appearance in the Durban Magistrates Court on Thursday, 7 March.

Nciki’s charges relate to reckless and negligent driving and having an unlicenced vehicle. They were granted R5 000 bail each.

They were arrested in Durban north after they were caught by the police on Wednesday night, 6 March allegedly driving a car with no number plates.

It's alleged that they were also carrying weapons without permits.

National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Nciki and Khoza appeared in court on charges of reckless driving, alternatively, disregard of a road traffic signal (a red traffic signal) and operating an unlicenced vehicle.

She said the state is alleging that the men were driving along Lighthouse Road in Umhlanga on Wednesday when they committed the offences.

"They were released on bail of R 5000 each and the case was remanded to 10 April for further investigation," said Ramkisson-Kara.

ANC KZN spokesman Mafika Mdebele said they have received media enquiries about the alleged arrest of an ANC leader in eThekwini region.

"At this stage, we don't believe that it will be appropriate for the ANC in the province to run commentary on matters that are in the hands of law enforcement agencies," he said.

He said that they will be in a position to comment once they've received a report from the leadership in eThekwini region.
