A WARD 61 ANC councillor has put a smile on the faces of gogos and mkhulus in Ekurhuleni.
Sanele Ngubane did this by hosting a Heritage Day for the elderly people at Zonke Izizwe Community Hall in Katlehong on Friday, 29 September.
He presented the elderly with blankets, and also had lunch with them as well as people living with disabilities.
He said: “It was important for me to share a special day in my life with the elderly. Often we forget them and make them feel neglected. We have to make them feel special and show them that we do not only remember them when we need their votes."
He said senior citizens are very important.
“When we spend time with the elderly, it provides a sense of dignity and purpose. They'll feel valued and are more open to sharing their wisdom,” he said.
Ngubane said this was the second annual event he organised for the elderly.
A jubilant Bonginkosi Gama said he was happy that the councillor showed love to the elderly and those living with disabilities.

The wheelchair-bound Gama (49) said everybody needs love.
“Spending time with others relieved stress for many of us. Ngubane is not your ordinary leader. He does not forget where he comes from. Hosting such an event means a lot to us, and I wish him all the best.”
Nikiwe Mthombeni (62) said even though there is a huge cry for service delivery, she appreciates the good gesture from the councillor.
She said: “He does not only come when he needs votes but hosts such events for elderly people. It says a lot about his humility. We need such leaders who are there to remind the community that elderly people should not be forgotten.”
