THE Greater Johannesburg Region’s Moloto Tambane Ward 14 branch in Soweto held a women’s month programme at the Protea South Multipurpose Hall on Saturday, 13 August.
The theme of the programme was Economic Freedom for Women in this lifetime.
The keynote speaker was Minister of Human Settlements Mmamoloko Kubayi, who is also a member in standing of ward 14.
The branch and its members pronounced they supported the minister to contest the deputy president position in the December conference.
The branch wants Kubayi as the party’s number two.
“The branch has thus resolved to raise your name, informed and shaped by the resolutions on socio-economic transformation, that as deputy president of the ANC you will be the kind of leader that drives the implementation of resolutions with urgency. Amandla! All power to the empowerment of women! Wathinta abafazi, wathinta imbokodo! Rise Cadre Mmamoloko rise! Phatha Cadre Mmamoloko phatha,” said ward secretary Esther Maema.
Kubayi said she stands on the shoulders of giants such as Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Charlotte Maxeke.
“By the way, I must say someone asked me, you are brave to be raising your hand and accepting this because many people are afraid. It’s scary I must say, honestly. We will be breaking barriers if it happens. For me, it’s not about me only. It’s about us breaking the ceiling in the ANC of women leadership and making history this year. The year 2022 must be of a turning point for women leadership in this country,” said Kubayi.
The branch believes the ANC branches of Soweto have been products of revolutionary circumstances, which have helped to ignite and shape the political configuration and relations of the ANC nationally.
