AMANDA Mpondo (26) was sitting at home as looters were destroying shops in July.
A friend gave her a six pack of looted beers, and it cost Amanda her life.
Her family from Rondebult, Ekurhuleni, claims Amanda was burnt to death at a neighbour’s house after being accused of having an affair with Sfiso, who gave her beer.
She later died in hospital and the man’s girlfriend has been on the run ever since. Sfiso was killed in a separate incident this year.
“We hear the woman questioned why her man gave her the beer. She was angry that her boyfriend, Sfiso, was cheating with Amanda, and we suspect she was involved in the murder,” said Amanda’s mum, Nolina Mpondo (55).
“It doesn’t make sense that the fire chose to burn only Amanda.
“The other people in the house sustained no burns and did nothing to save her.”
Nolina said her daughter, who was self-employed, wasn’t at work that day because of the unrest.
She said when she was called to the scene, she found Amanda groaning in pain on the floor. She had sustained serious burns from her face down
“I was told she caught fire while sitting on a couch, and that the fire was caused by a griller they were using to keep warm. But the griller was far away from where she was.”
Nolina said it looked as if chemicals had been poured over her and she was set alight.
“We are told Sfiso’s girlfriend was unhappy that he gave Amanda beers. We suspect this was a case of jealousy, and Sfiso is dead.”
“I want all those responsible for Amanda’s death to be arrested.” held accountable. My daughter died more than six months ago, and no one has been arrested,” she said.
Captain Manare Ramotshela said a case of murder has been opened at Alberton Police Station and was under investigation.
