A woman (20) thanks God and her ancestors that she managed to escape death at the hands of her rapists – but she still wants justice.
The woman from Lower Crossroads in Cape Town was raped by three men armed with knives after they threatened to kill her.
She managed to escape after the rapists started fighting among themselves.
“After they all raped me, they wanted to carry on but ended up fighting over who should go next,” she said.
“Two of them were fighting while one was still getting dressed. I started screaming and ran out of the shack.”
The incident happened on 16 April in Better Life in Philippi while she was having a night out at a friend’s house.
It was when she went outside to see what had happened to a friend that she was dragged away by three men who took her to a shack.
After she escaped, she went to the cop shop and opened a case.
The woman knew the name of one of the suspects, so she went to the area with the cops.
Community members took the cops to the suspect’s house, who then implicated two of his minor friends..
The suspects (24) and two minors, aged 16 and 17, were arrested.
“They must face the wrath of the law whether they are minors or not.
“If they can rape, then they are grown-ups. They must be treated as such,” said the woman.
Her 43-year-old mother said: “It could have been worse. At least she managed to escape. She could have been killed.”
Captain Frederick van Wyk said the suspects appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on 21 and 26 April. They will appear again on 15 May. The case is being investigated by Nyanga FCS detectives.
