THE family of Lufuno Mavhunga has received an early Christmas present.

The gift consists of new household appliances such as a refrigerator, stove, TV, microwave, and groceries.

Mavhunga’s family was showered with donations by the transport company Netshituhuni Coaches and Bus Service, accompanied by the MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani, during a prayer day on Tuesday, 28 November.

The news of the late Mbilwi Secondary School pupil Lufuno’s death made headlines when the 15-year-old took her own life with an overdose of pills in April after being allegedly beaten by another pupil in a bullying incident.

The incident occurred after Lufuno was allegedly beaten by another pupil in a bullying incident two years ago.

The friendship between Netshituhuni and the Mavhunga family began in 2021 when the Mavhunga family lost their last-born daughter.

Joseph Mavhungo, Lufuno's father, told Daily Sun the preparations for the day were difficult due to the resurgence of old memories.

"We are thankful for the support we are receiving from the MEC and Bishop Radzilani and Netshituni Bus Service, who always visit us all the time.

"We didn't expect these many gifts that they are giving us, and we appreciate them. They are now like a family to us,” he said.

The bus company's brand manager Vusani Masakona told Daily Sun they want to always be there for the Mavhunga family.

"During our last visit, we saw that there were a few things they didn't have in their house, and we brought them today.

"We are still going to visit them so they must feel they are not alone," he said.

Radzilani said the government has initiated programmes to ensure safety at schools.

"We are having dialogues with learners to find solutions on how to make our schools safe.

"We have partnered with the Department of Education. I was touched by what the Netshituni family is doing," she said.

Radzilani also encouraged community members to enjoy the festive season responsibly and abide by the law.
