SPEAKER after speaker at the memorial service of teacher, Seraka Mogoswane (49) condemned fights over positions at Unity Secondary School.

Mourners were angry at how a teacher was brutally killed on Friday, 5 March.

He was shot eight times while sitting in his car.

Mogoswane, who was allegedly waiting for people in his car, died on the scene after he was approached by unknown suspects who pumped bullets into his body.

His maroon Chevrolet car was riddled with 12 bullet holes, eight of which were found in his body.

People close to him suspect that in-fighting at Unity Secondary School could be the reason the beloved Sadtu shop steward is lying in a mortuary.

"Had the Gauteng Department of Education intervened earlier, Mogoswane could still be alive," said Universal Association SGB member, Fraser Komane.

"We have correspondence between ourselves and the department telling them about problems at Unity Secondary and they did nothing. That school has a lot of problems," said another SGB member.

According to sources, the new principal, who has been at the school for two years, wasn't wanted.

"At one point, some members of the school's management team influenced pupils to join in their fight against the new principal. Pupils also protested and wanted the principal to be removed.

"Mogoswane was supportive to the principal. We suspected he might have been a victim for being vocal about the wrongs at that school," the SGB member said.

His Economics, Business Studies and Accounting pupils said he has left a huge void.

"He used to love his job and made sure we understood our work," said a pupil.

"We miss him already," said another pupil.

His uncle Lethoke Mogoswane, who was also like a dad to him, said Mogoswane died brutally.

"It was like the person who killed him was killing a beast. Even a cow dies with one bullet. We don't understand the anger this person had towards my son. We hope the killers will be found and face the full might of the law," Lethoka said.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said: "We're deeply concerned at the onslaught of our teachers following the deaths of two teachers, which occurred on the same day and involved shootings. We wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the respective families and school communities while pleading with law enforcement agencies to bring the culprits of these senseless killings to book."

The second female teacher, who was also shot dead on the same day, was based at Riverside High School in Vanderbylpark in the Vaal.

Captain Nelda Sekgobela said police are investigating a murder case.
